A Drinking Water Test Kit Can Prevent Illness In The Family

By Leticia Jensen

Water plays such a major part in our daily lives that we rarely give it a second thought. We assume it is going to be there when we need it, and that it is also going to be pure enough to keep us safe. We use it for all the major aspects of our daily lives, like washing, cooking and drinking, and we would miss it if it was not there.

However, it's possible that it can become contaminated. When this happens people can become extremely sick, something we do not want to happen to our family members. The problem is, what can we do to be confident that what we are drinking is safe. These days it is possible to buy drinking water test kit to use at home.

Most people get their supply from the local utility company, and expect that they test it before it is distributed to the local area. However, once it has left them on the way to your home it has to go through miles of pipes before you can use it. Some of these pipes are very old, and even though they are the responsibility of your supplier they could still be poorly maintained. Any pipework that is on your property is your responsibility.

Poorly maintained pipes can become corroded, and this could affect the purity of the water that is passing through them. The smallest breach in one of these pipes could result in harmful chemicals and bacteria from the soil entering the water supply. It is possible to test for these impurities so as to be confident that you are keeping your family members safe.

It can be very difficult to accept that such a clear looking liquid is able to spread diseases to an unsuspecting public. It is responsible for diseases like legionnaires, heart problems and lead poisoning. Nowadays though, you are able to test the water that comes out of your faucet for just a few dollars.

Now you will find it simpler to test for contamination than it was in the past. Until these kits were devised you would have to send samples to your local laboratory for testing. This process could take time, and also be very expensive. After you have tested the water yourself, you may feel that you need a second opinion from an independent laboratory, but they are no longer the first port of call.

Unfortunately some of the bacteria that infect our supply do not give out any ghastly odors or tastes so it is difficult to judge whether there is something wrong. However, by testing the water yourself you should see if there is a problem. Though it is also important that you do know how to read the results..

If you have any doubt about the purity of your supply you must contact a specialist. This is even more important if there is a pregnant person, or a child under 12 months old, living in the household. This is the situation where it is better to be safe rather than sorry, and nobody will chastise you for being concerned in such a situation.
