The Types Of Treatment Available From A Tampa Pain Management Clinic

By Marissa Velazquez

A Tampa pain management clinic will see patients who suffer from chronic pains which may be the result of illness, injury or surgical procedures. A patient will not usually start by going to this type of medical facility, but will rather be referred by their general physician. At the clinics, patients will be treated for their distress, and the doctor will focus on managing their pains as well.

Visiting a medical facility where you have not been before can be a nerve wracking experience. It is therefore helpful to know what you can expect when you arrive, and the types of treatments that are applied there. It is recommended to get there a little earlier than your time of appointment (about half an hour to an hour earlier). This is because sometimes there is more than one patient booked for a specific time, and the first to arrive will be seen first.

The hospital will need information from you, and you will therefore have to complete some papers. This is usually only necessary the first time you go. The papers will require details of your medical insurance and your personal information (date of birth, place of residence, name etc.). You may also have to list things like the medicines you are currently taking.

When you go to the hospital for the first time quite a few tests and examinations will be done to assess your current condition. It is also very helpful if you can bring with you anything that relates to your condition. Perhaps you have had x-rays done by your other doctors, or have had scans. These results can be shown to the staff.

Quite a lot of questions will need to be answered upon our first visit. A nurse will usually see you first, and attend to finding out all this information. You may have to answer questions about your medical history, allergies and medicines that you have taken in the past. It is maybe helpful to make a note of these before you go to the hospital. The nurse will also do a general examination, recording temperature, blood pressure etc.

The nurse will ask questions about the painfulness of your condition. She might ask that you indicate on a drawing of a body where your pain is located, and will ask if you are also suffering from additional problems, such as fatigue or nausea. Once all this information has been obtained, you will be ready for your consultation with the doctor.

Your doctor will then decide how to help you. He may suggest some medications which are usually of the anti-inflammatory, antidepressant or anti-seizure variety, or he may recommend that you follow some specific exercise routines, either at home or at the hospital. Furthermore, pain-blocking injections may be prescribed, which can provide relief for a decent length of time.

If none of the above-mentioned treatments bring sufficient relief, the doctor may suggest various surgical options. Some surgeries include the insertion of an infusion pump or a spinal cord stimulator. If you feel that the medications that your general physician can prescribe are not sufficiently dealing with your condition, then it is a good option to go to a Tampa pain management clinic for further assistance.
